Treating Carpet Water Damage

Having carpet water damage is never a pleasant issue. When carpet water damage does occur, action needs to be taken quickly to ensure that further damage to the carpet does not occur. The carpet water damage must be remedied within 24 to 48 hours of the initial damage to prevent mold, mildew, and other bacteria from growing. This article will assist you in this process to restore your carpet back to new again.

The first thing to do when carpet water damage occurs is to identify the source of the water and stop it immediately. If the water source is sanitary, such as a leaky water pipe or water seeping in from a basement wall, the carpet can be restored if the proper steps are taken. If the source of water is from an unsanitary source, such as a toilet overflow or sewage backup, the carpet should be replaced. The next step is to remove all furniture and rugs from the affected area. Also, keep foot traffic to a minimum to prevent further carpet water damage from occurring. This will stop the water from seeping into the carpet backing and padding.

Next, try and soak up as much water as possible and dry the carpet. Place towels on the affected carpeting and pat dry the area. Place fans facing the affected area and allow them to run at a high speed. If you have a dehumidifier, place it in the area where the carpet water damage has occurred to aid in drying out the carpet. It is also a good idea, if possible, to lift the carpet off of the tack strip to inspect the carpet padding. If the carpet padding is wet as well, dry out this area first using the same steps above.

Finally, a professional carpet cleaning company should be called. Professional carpet cleaners will assess the carpet water damage and fully restore the carpet. By having the carpet professionally cleaned, all stains will be removed and any bacteria, mold, or mildew that has started to form will be sanitized and removed. Professional carpet cleaning companies will have the necessary tools and supplies to deep clean the carpet thoroughly and completely.

It is important to act on carpet water damage quickly before further damage occurs. If too much time has past, more costly repairs may have to be performed such as a complete tear out and replacement of the flooring. To prevent this, dry the affected area as much as you can on your own and call a professional carpet cleaning company as soon as possible.
